Provocation

Last week Ms Jinchi gave us an assignment...

... regarding about provocation. We were to find two examples. It could be in any form, like images, videos, furniture, textiles and so on. Provocation is basically something that would provoke one to think.

After researching, I decided to go with 15Malaysia's 'One Future' by Tan Chui Mui. I guess this video shows a powerful message about our current situation in Malaysia where everyone is blinded by the government. We are just following orders from them and whenever we want to speak out, we will be sent to the ISA. No one will notice about that and go on with their "perfect" lives.

The other example I have chosen is Kevin Carter's famous photo that won him the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for feature photography. The photo depicts a starving Sudanese girl crawling towards a feeding centre with a vulture (a vulture knows when death is coming) stalking her. It shows the current situation in South Africa where starvation is not an uncommon problem. And no one is helping the country.

" Seeking relief from the sight of masses of people starving to death, he wandered into the open bush. He heard a soft, high-pitched whimpering and saw a tiny girl trying to make her way to the feeding centre. As he crouched to photograph her, a vulture landed in view. Careful not to disturb the bird, he positioned himself for the best possible image. He would later say he waited about 2o minutes, hoping the vulture would spread its wings. It did not, and after he took his photographs, he chased the bird away and watched as the little girl resumed her struggle. Afterward he sat under a tree, lit a cigarette, talked to God and cried."

The photographer committed suicide after suffering from depression. I guess if you were to work in this kind of environment for many years, your sanity might just go haywire.

I don't know about you.. but these provocations certainly provoked my thoughts...
